It is clear that e-cigarettes have many advantages over traditional smoking. They don’t make everything smell as cigarette smoke does. They can often be used where smoking is normally prohibited (although this is slowly changing). They help eliminate cigarette butts littering the streets. But one of the biggest advantages is the cost savings. Let’s take a look at some average differences in cost between vaping and “analogue” smoking.

Cost of Smoking

The cost of a pack of cigarettes in the United States varies greatly State by State due to different tax rates. But if we take the median rate of approximately $6.00 per pack and an average smoking rate of one pack per day, the total yearly cost of smoking is $2,190. This does not include additional costs such as lighters, ashtrays, and time, but for simplicity the $2,190 is a good place to start.

Cost of Vaping

There are different methods to vaping. There are disposables where the entire e-cigarette is thrown away once used up. There are also electronic cigarettes that use a rechargeable battery, but the mouthpiece containing the e-liquid is disposable. The third and most economical way is to use a rechargeable vaporizer with bottles of e-liquid so they can be refilled over and over again. For this example, let’s use the vaporizer with e-liquid method. This is quickly becoming one of the most popular methods of vaping.

A 21st century vapor pen can be purchased for as little as $24.99. The atomizer should be replaced every 2 or 3 months. Again for simplicity, let’s say you buy an entirely new unit every 3 months. That is a total of $99.96 per year.

Of course you will also need e-liquid. You can buy a 15ml bottle for around $7. And for a pack a day smoker, you will use a couple bottles per month. Let’s even say you want to try a couple random flavors and average it to 30 bottles per year. That is $210 per year in e-liquid. That brings the total for vaping up to $310 per year!

Conclusion

It’s pretty obvious to see that the price of vaping is substantially lower than smoking. Even with slightly cigarettes the price difference is huge. Do your wallet a favor and try an e-cigarette!

One Response to E-Cigarettes vs Smoking: A Cost Analysis

  1. The price of e cigarettes is much less than the traditional cigarettes. I have been using ecigs from the last six months and have saved many bucks even after purchasing branded ones. It may be that the price is different in different regions.
