I totally agree with your post. The Whiteson guy's an idiot. Here is what he said as reported on CBS:

"...there's no proof that these cigarettes are safe. No proof whatsoever. They are made in China."

In fact most of the USA's medicine - with very little regulation from the US. If the US stopped importing goods because they were Chinese, the whole country would cease to function.

Again, he said: "This has not been studied." As Paul Bergen of the Tobacco Harm Reduction project said to me in an email, these people just lie and say there is no research, or they say that the research has not been done by the FDA as if other research doesn't count.

Whiteson also says: "We have no analysis of the vapor." In fact we do - Murray Lauderson states that each puff of vapor contains: "very small quantities of nicotine dissolved in propylene glycol, two small well-known molecules with excellent safety profiles."

The fact of the matter is that detractors of the electronic cigarette are resorting to lies and misinformation to make their case - a case which is that a device which all current research suggests is far safer than cigarettes should be banned.

It makes you wonder just what the detractor's motivation is...

This broadcast certainly was disappointing in the amount of misinformation it contained. I think it's interesting that despite Dr. Whiteson's stance on the e-cigs, one of the first things he says is that the vapour inhaled is without the "toxic smoke" that occurs with a real cigarette. Since he doesn't appear to have done his research with regard to the testing that has been done on the e-cig, he seems to hold the belief that despite knowing real cigarettes to be highly toxic, if it came down to it, he would prefer smokers to keep using them instead of the "unknown" e-cig (which takes a stretch of the imagination to think it might be worse than the real cigarette).
